Monday Morning Amusement - 1/12/09

Good Monday Morning All,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! This is my first entry in the new year and I’m very excited about it. But I must express that I’m a little heartbroken over the loss suffered by my dear Carolina Panthers this weekend. We got spanked in our own house by the Arizona Cardinals and it was just plain embarrassing. So now that they are out of the playoffs, I need to find another team to root for on the road to the Super Bowl. My cousin Greg was making fun of me the other day because he’s been a Pittsburg Steelers fan nearly since birth, and I told him that the team I root for depends on where I’m living at the time. When I first became interested in football, I lived in northern Virginia - so I became a Redskins fan. When I moved to Baltimore, I became a Ravens fan and they won the Super Bowl that year. Now I’m in Charlotte, so it’s the Panthers all the way. I did live in New York State for 8 years, but for some reason I failed to embrace the Giants. Go figure. But I think that, for sentimental reasons, I’ll always be a Redskins fan at heart.

Moving on, it is now 12 days into the new year and I can bet that there are a number of well-intentioned souls who have already abandoned their new year’s resolutions. Fortunately, this year I’m not one of them. For some years now, I haven’t made any resolutions because I always end up keeping them for no longer than a couple months or so. Maybe it’s because like many people my resolutions are overly ambitious (not necessarily impossible, though) – like trying to lose 25 pounds in 14 days by consuming nothing but lemonade mixed with syrup and cayenne pepper. Or running a 5K race in 2 months with no prior running experience. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s just something about a new year that motivates most people to want to be better, to want to do better - even if the motivation lasts for only a few months. A family member, one of those well-intentioned souls I mentioned earlier, vowed to give up smoking in the new year. She lasted about 2 days. Maybe the cold turkey approach was a bit overly ambitious for someone who has been a smoker for 30+ years. So I’m thinking that some type of gradual step program may be better for her. I believe she can do it, though.

This year, I’m gonna try something different – something that I know will bring me immense gratification. Something I know I can stick with. Years ago Oprah did a show about random acts of kindness, which is probably when I first became familiar with the term. What a wonderful concept this is - doing something nice for someone and not expecting anything in return. I believe that there is fulfillment and joy in helping others. I’ve been on the receiving end of someone else’s generosity many times throughout my life. So this year, I’ve decided to make a conscious effort to perform at least one random act of kindness a week. Many of these “acts” will not be grand gestures, but it will be something to make someone’s day a little better.
And if any of you is interested in joining me, feel free to do so. I’m not asking anyone to give a kidney, donate your eyeballs or sign over your house to anybody. But you might be surprised to find out how much a little kindness could mean to someone. Just try it and see what happens.

Birthday wishes go out to: Jacquos N. (1/14) and Swandolyn L. (1/15).

That’s it for now. Have a blessed week and enjoy the funnies. And remember: The purpose of life is a life of purpose. (Robert Byrne)

Much love,

Kimberly
