Monday Morning Amusement - 1/26/09

Good Monday Morning All,

Monday is here….AGAIN. I knew it was coming, but I’m just never ready for it. Unless it’s a holiday. It reminds me of one of those people who show up at your door unannounced – even though I know it comes every week. But I figure, if I just sit still and be v-e-e-ery quiet, maybe it’ll think I’m not home and it’ll go away. Now FRIDAY, on the other hand, is a very welcomed guest. I look forward to seeing it when it arrives. But after 24 hours, it’s got ta go!!

I trust that all of you who made your way to DC for the presidential inauguration returned home safely. And I’m sure that those of you who live/work in and around DC were glad to see them go back home, so that your daily commute could get back to normal. I can only imagine trying to take the train or bus to work on last Tuesday and having to compete with hundreds of thousands of out-of-towners for a small piece of standing room. Mass transit riders know that it’s already packed during rush hour as it is. And now they have to add all of these visitors to the mix. It was definitely a good day to work from home or just take the day off altogether. Good thing presidential inaugurations only take place once every four years. But to be honest, I don’t know if we’ll ever see that many people at another inauguration. Unless it’s a woman. I can see it now: Oprah for President in 2016. The buttons and t-shirts are being printed up as we speak (or as I type).

This weekend I hung out in ATL with my mom and my friend Vesta for the annual Honda Battle of the Bands at the Georgia Dome. For those that aren’t familiar with this event, just picture the movie Drumline, but in living color. This was my third time attending and it was just as much fun as the first time. All 10 bands did such a great job, but I must say that Florida A&M stole the show. Their band is called “The Marching 100,” but there were more than 400 band members on the field. There was a nice mix of songs from the old school as well as the new performed in the showcase. But the most performed song of the evening was Jasmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows” which puzzled me a bit since I thought it might be Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” or T.I.’s “Live Your Life.” And the biggest “blast from the past” for me was “If I Ever Fall in Love” from Shai. As far as the choreography (if you will), Soulja Boy’s dances were pretty popular among the bands. I had never heard of the “Bird Walk” dance until I saw it on Saturday. Boy, do I feel old. Anyway, you can tell how much hard work went into the practicing and preparation. So hats off to all the musicians, dancers, flag girls, drum majors, directors and field crews for a job well done. And next year, I’ll be sure to do my homework and ask my little cousins to show me the latest dances because I MIGHT want to do them in the stands like everybody else.

That’s about it for this week, but first I want to send birthday wishes out to K. Williams (1/27).

Ok, now I’m done. Enjoy the funnies and have a blessed week!
